Brenda Adelman, the daughter of a Jewish father and an artist mother, grew up in the Mill Basin section of Brooklyn, New York. A fan of Broadway shows since childhood, she studied acting at several prestigious schools in London, New York, and Los Angeles. In 1995, her mother, an award-winning artist and photographer, was shot to death in her home.
