Hee-chul Kwon was born in Seoul, South Korea. At the age of 14, he ran away from home. Separated from his family as a teenager, he would say he was subjected to the darker underbelly of society. It is during this tumultuous time, he decided to become a director. Reunited with his family at the age of 15, he returned to school.
